February VIP Special Offer

There's nothing like getting the month started with a bit of a 'bang' ... so we've brought back a very popular VIP Special Offer for this month:

Order 300 units ... Get 500!

Yes, that is absolutely correct! Place your order for 300 CDs in any of our standard CD Eco-Sleeves or CD Digipak and we'll provide you with not 300... but 500 units! Act now because the order deadline is the end of business day (4:30 pm Pacific Standard Time) on February 10, 2012.

If you can't react quickly enough to take advantage of this offer by the deadline date, you can submit your order forms and payment prior to deadline and we'll hold the offer open for you. You can then submit your order assets when they are ready.

As is typical for our all-inclusive CD packages, when you order 300 units or more your quote includes:
  • CD replication (not CD duplication)
  • Full colour disc print
  • Durable 15pt eco board stock, printed full colour (CMYK 4/0)
  • All set-ups, film assembly and wrap
  • Pre-press and one round of PDF proofs via email
If you have any questions about us, our products and services, or this special offer - we'd love to hear from you!

CDwest VIP Special Offers for January 2012

The entire CDwest.ca team would like to wish you a Happy New Year - hoping that 2012 is a happy, healthy and prosperous year for one and all!

We've had a lot of good responses on our running three VIP Special Offers each month (instead of just one) so it looks like we'll be continuing with three for the foreseeable future!

> One feature will relate to CD manufacturing or CD duplication orders... either a discount on product or a value added item tied into a CD order.

> A second feature will relate to a Commercial Printing product or service from our www.PrecisionPrinting.ca website.

> The third feature will be a bit of a wild card... we'll just have to see what we can do with that one on a month-to-month basis.

Graphic Design Is A Huge Part Of Your CD Duplication Project

Have you heard the old saying "Image is everything" or that "You've only got 15 seconds to make a good first impression"?

As superficial as that may sound, in many instances it is absolutely true. Everywhere we turn we're being bombarded with advertisements, slogans, and messages, so we have become very adept at tuning out what isn't meaningful to us or doesn't impress us.

So what does that have to do with your upcoming CD duplication project?

When a complete stranger first looks at your freshly manufactured product what will they see?  You notice I said "what will they see?" and not "what will they hear?" because it's your packaging and the graphic design that people see first... and judge first. For some people, if they are not suitably impressed with what they "see" they'll won't bother getting to the "hear" stage of it.

Who are these nasty pre-judging people? Don't they know that it's all about the music and that the graphic design and CD packaging is just window-dressing?

Well, from countless interviews, discussions and articles that I have been privvy to, a significant segment of these pre-judging people are the very industry professionals you should be trying to get on the good side of - such as booking agents, reviewers, program managers.

These industry pro's are inundated with submissions from artists or bands just like you, with everyone wanting a piece of their time and crossing their fingers for a favorable review or opportunity.
When it comes to this visual pre-judgement, the comment I've heard most often goes something like this, "I've been doing this long enough to know that an amateurish looking package or graphic design generally means amateurish music. There aren't enough hours in the day, so if there's no immediate wow-factor for me I move on to the next package."

In short, what these people are looking for is professionalism. Professional attitude, acting professional, professional performance, professional merchandise, professional look, etc. etc.

At the end of the day, impressing people with some visual wow-factor is going to get you a lot further ahead than saving a few bucks by doing the graphic design on your CD duplication project yourself. Do what you do best - and if that's not graphic design then don't be too shy or too proud to hand it off to someone who can make you look good!  :)

Indie Musicians Should Think of QR Codes Instead of Barcodes

QR Codes are becoming increasingly popular for marketing purposes… you’ll be seeing their use skyrocket in 2012.

“QR Code” stands for “Quick Response Code” and was created back in 1994 by a subsidiary of Toyota to track vehicles during the manufacturing process.  It is very much like a barcode in that each unique code relates to unique data but QR Code popularity comes from how quickly and reliably it can be read, plus its large storage capacity.

In today’s marketing world QR Codes are now being used quite creatively to relate promotional information. All you need is a Smartphone with a code reader and you’re off to the races. Here’s an example:
You’re walking down a city sidewalk and see a sign outside a restaurant that features a QR Code. You scan the code using the QR Code reader on your Smart Phone and you get information about a special discount or promotion that the restaurant is offering (or whatever other information the restaurant might want to promote to you).

The way I look at it, using QR Codes is an excellent and exciting guerrilla marketing tool for independent musicians, film makers, promoters, etc.  Here’s why, using independent musicians as an example:

One of the toughest things for a musician is to get noticed and get his/her music heard. After all, they exist in a huge sea of other musicians and performers who are also striving to be seen and heard.  Through the creative use of QR Codes, you can drive people directly to you and your music. The Codes can be used on all of your promotional materials.

I love the idea of printing up t-shirts with a big Code on the front and the back with a slogan saying, “Listen to this!”. Hand the t-shirts out to friends, and as they walk around at school, or shopping, or at an event, they are going to capture a fair bit of interest. Of course people don’t know what it is the Code will lead them to, and that’s the point. It could be anything, and you want their curiosity to get the better of them!

For a lot of independent musicians, getting their CDs into retail stores (at least reasonably big stores) is pretty much a thing of the past, so wanting a barcode to be added during the CD duplication process has become outdated for most independents. There is still a prevailing sense that having a traditional barcode will make the package look more professional but, again, what’s the point in adding it if it’s not going to be used?

It makes far more sense to start using a QR Code on everything from posters, to t-shirts to CD duplication packaging and deliver content to existing fans and prospective new fans alike.

Recording Studio Referral Program

In an effort to provide recording studios with an opportunity to explore a new revenue stream, CDwest.ca has recently launched a Recording Studio Referral Program where recording studios earn cash or credits-on-account for referrals that place CD manufacturing orders with us.

The program is designed to be simple and care-free so there's no obligation or contract to sign and the recording studios don't have to act as a middle-man between their clients and us. We work directly with the clients and the studios get rewarded for the referral - it's as easy as that!

As a member of the Program you will be given a unique referral identification number that you give to your client which they, in turn, provide to us on their CD manufacturing order forms.

Program members earn a 10% referral reward based on:
  • The regular retail price of our products and services (not applicable to special offers or discounted items).
  • The net cost of the products/services only (not applicable to tax or shipping costs).
Here's an example of the commission based on our very popular style CS1000 Digipak:
  • 1000 units: Retail $1.49 per unit (referral reward: $149.00)
  • 500 units: Retail $2.31 per unit (referral reward: $115.50)
  • 300 units: Retail $2.99 per unit (referral reward: $89.70)
  • 100 units: Retail $3.99 per unit (referral reward: $39.90)

March VIP Special - And Taking A Stand Against Cruelty To Animals

Place your CD manufacturing or CD duplication order this month (March 2011) to take advantage of our VIP Member Special:

Take 5% off the regular retail price of any standard CD manufacturing or CD duplication product ... PLUS ... we will make a donation on your behalf to the BC SPCA.

“The incident that occurred in Whistler, B.C. certainly brought much needed attention to the topic of animal welfare,” states Mike Arnold, CDwest.ca General Manager, “but when the spotlight of the media turns away to another story animal welfare issues do not suddenly stop. Due to this we’d like to do our part to help create awareness of ongoing animal welfare issues as well as donating to the BC SPCA to fund their crucial work.”

All donated funds help to pay for the care and protection of nearly 37,000 domestic, farm and wild animals the SPCA cares for each year in British Columbia. This includes funding of the BC SPCA’s cruelty investigations department which conducts nearly 6,000 cruelty investigations a year and is reliant on donations from the public to continue its work.

KBA 74 Karat Eco-Friendly Printer

CDwest.ca is the audio division of Precision Disc Manufacturing Corp., and we are pleased to announce the purchase of a KBA 74 Karat 29” waterless digitally integrated offset press.

The KBA 74 Karat is considered to be one of the ‘greenest’ print presses on the planet and, while we definitely require an environmentally-friendly printer for our product line of DVD and CD eco-packaging solutions, the KBA 74 Karat also delivers very high quality print reproduction for our discerning clientele.

“We’re delighted to have been able to purchase this particular press.” states company president Paul Durnie, “It fits perfectly into our mandate for environmentally responsible technology and processes, and it’s the perfect fit for growing our print division and new ‘green’ product offerings. The press-sheet size, quick make-ready and printer speed made the 74 Karat a must-have for us.”

For a 29” printer of this calibre, the KBA 74 Karat has a very compact footprint (12’-9” long, 7’-3” wide and 7’-0” tall) and everything about this printer is designed for efficiency and user-friendliness. For example, the machine holds two cassettes of imaging plates (sufficient to print 10 jobs) which are imaged and changed automatically within the printer.

A complete job change with automated plate change, imaging and inking only takes about 15 minutes, with a maximum of just ten make-ready sheets. That’s quite amazing for an offset printer, when you think of the waste that is prevented by such efficient operation and technology.

And speaking of efficiency, the KBA 74 Karat has a maximum production speed of 10,000 sheets per hour, with waterless offset plates that can allow print-runs of up to 100,000 copies.

This press does away with paper waste, ink sludge, toxic cleaners and chemical developers that are typically associated with offset printing. Through its use of soy based inks, completely waterless printing technology, and inline aqueous coating, the KBA 74 Karat provides the highest quality eco-friendly print solutions you’ll find anywhere without sacrificing print quality one bit!

When combined with Precision Disc’s existing Indigo printers, not only does the KBA 74 Karat enhance our print production capacity and speed, the 29” press sheet also increases the number of products we can provide.

Printer features and highlights:

• Waterless offset – brilliant colour, sharp dots
• Soft reproduction of the finest gradients
• No ghosting
• Superb solids
• In-line water based (aqueous) finishing.
• Solid densities and tone reproduction to ISO 12647-1/2/3
• Make-ready: 10 sheets
• Press dimensions (L x W x H): 12’-9” x 7’-3” x 7’-0”
• Weight: 26,500 pounds
• Power: 65kVA
• Max sheet size: 29.125” x 20.5”
• Max speed: 10,000 sph (job dependent)
• Resolution: 100 dots/mm = 2,540 dpi
• RIP: Creo Brisque

Eco-Friendly: At CDwest.ca we have chosen the right tools, materials and procedures to provide the most environmentally friendly and sustainable products possible. Not only do we use 100% recycled and FSC certified boardstock for our Digipaks, we also use waterless printing technology that requires virtually zero make-ready materials.

Recycling Program: Another reason we're a front-runner with eco-friendly solutions - did you know that we also provide a CD recycling program for your unwanted discs and plastic cases?

CD Duplication, Intellectual Property and Copyright

In the CD duplication and CD manufacturing world, we pay a lot of attention to Intellectual Property and Copyright because we produce countless CDs (and DVDs) each business day. While personal views on copyright and 'ownership' can vary wildly from person to person, that must be put aside because, for the good of our clients and our business, it's important that we operate within the laws of the land.

So first of all, what is "Intellectual Property"? The following definition is provided by Wikipedia:

“Intellectual property (IP) is a term referring to distinct types of ‘creations of the mind’ for which property rights are recognised – and the corresponding fields of law. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets, such as musical, literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs. Common types of intellectual property include copyrights, trademarks, patents, industrial design rights and trade secrets in some jurisdictions.”

This is very important to note because, due to the legal aspects, you can violate copyright laws with your CD duplication or CD manufacturing order if you are not the intellectual property rights owner of all content on your master. Violation of these copyright laws is generally referred to as ‘piracy’ and can be punishable in a court of law.

If you don’t own all of the intellectual property on your CD or DVD master you will need to get licensing for all un-owned content and then provide proof of licensing to the company doing the CD duplication or CD manufacturing of your order.

Obtaining Licensing for Audio/Music Content

If all the songs on your CD are your own original compositions and you're not using audio samples or sound bytes that you took from somewhere (or someone) else, then you shouldn't have any licensing concerns.

The most common licensing requirement for an audio CD is if you're performing a 'cover' version of someone else's song. If this is the case you require Mechanical Licensing - which is essentially a royalty for each CD that is made featuring the song. Separate licensing agreements must be made for each individual cover song.

The evolution of digital printing has made fundamental changes in the printing process. Printing is an industrial process but digital printing is a computerized process which is, by its very nature, less demanding of resources and less wasteful than conventional print.

Digital printing has eliminated many stages of traditional printing that were time, energy and resource-consuming, and were accompanied by liquid and solid waste and fumes, some of which require specialist treatment for disposal. The use of chemistry for film and plate processing is eliminated with digital print, as is the substantial waste of materials used in the 'make ready' stage of offset printing.

Digital printing enables shorter run lengths and turnaround times which leads to less consumption and waste - it is estimated that prior to the advent of digital printing as much as 56% of all print was thrown away unused.

Dealing With Sources of Printer Related Waste

▪ Imaging Oil: The imaging oil used in conjunction with the Indigo's ElektroInk can be disposed of using normal means - it does not require special handling for disposal. To cut down on the consumption of imaging oil in the printing process the Indigo Printer recycles its own oil and, as an added enhancement to that feature, at CDwest.ca we clean and re-use our imaging oil to further extend its life.

▪ Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): During the printing process, volatile organic compounds are released from inks. None of the Indigo inks or other supplies used in the Indigo printing process contain substances that are listed on the US Federal list of Hazardous Air Pollutants as established by the Federal Clean Air Act, or the European Union's VOC Directive.

▪ Ozone Exposure: Ozone exposure levels in the workplace are subject to control and regulation across the world. The Indigo Printer produces ozone at low levels, generated by the scorotron and charge roller that charges the photoreceptor. In regular operation, ozone peak levels are found to be well below the international occupational health standard of 100ppb for an eight-hour exposure level.

Additional sources of waste include empty ink cartridges, used imaging blankets, Binary Ink Developer (BID) and cleaning rags. Under U.S. Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria, none of these waste products are classified as hazardous waste and so they can be disposed of by normal means.

The Inks We Use For Digital Printing

▪ The "ElektroInk" used by the Indigo Printer is the single most recognizable difference between the Indigo and all other forms of digital printing. Most digital printers use dry toner, but because the Indigo uses liquid ink it is much more able to reproduce the quality "look and feel" of offset print than other forms of digital print.
